WHO calls for HIV prevention

The World Health Organisation and UNAIDS jointly released the 2009 AIDS Epidemic Update which estimated that 33.4 million people worldwide are infected with HIV, with about 2/3 of those living in sub-Saharan Africa. The AIDS death toll has also passed 25 million which is just staggering. It is higher than the entire population of 18 of the nations which have qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup!
The report noted that infection rates are slowing and treatment is reaching more people. However, there were an estimated 2.7 million new HIV infections worldwide in 2008, and an estimated 2.0 million AIDS-related deaths. The report called for "immediate steps to elevate the priority given to HIV prevention" as "sub-Saharan Africa′s epidemic continues to outpace the response." UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe was quoted as saying, "Any time we are putting two people on treatment, five people are being infected."
