It's hard to believe that I have been here for two months already! It seems like only a week ago I was arriving at King Shaka airport in the pouring rain, I was quickly made to feel at home in the WhizzKids house with the other volunteers and felt part of the team in no time. The office here is full of people from around the world and we're always busy, especially in the last couple of weeks having just moved the office to our new location only a 5 minute walk from the house.
However the office is only half the story. It is when you get to the Health Academy an hour away in Edendale that you really see the full impact of everybody's work. The academy provides a vital service in the treatment and prevention of HIV&AIDS to the community and the place becomes alive when the kids are let out from school. They make full use of the football pitch which lies in front of the academy whatever the weather and always get involved with the arts and crafts activities on offer. One of my main tasks in Edendale is to run a comic book workshop in collaboration with Cardiff University at the local school Mthethomusha , it's great fun and the kids love cartoons and drawing.
It's not all work here at WhizzKids, Durban is a buzzing city and there is always plenty of things to do on the weekend, there's plenty of places to go out and I managed to catch the last rugby game of the season which happened to be the Curries cup final held here in Durban! Unfortunately the Sharks lost but it was an awesome day out. My time here at WhizzKids is rushing past and I can't wait for the next few months and the challenges it will bring!
